MARTVILI CANYON. DENDROLOGICAL PARK, PETRA FORTRESS
high rocks the narrow gorge, 40 meters in depth. At the bottom still the river murmurs,
being broken by the rough stream, forming silent creeks. In the top part of the canyon from
rocks, the falls break, but it is possible to reach it only by boat. We will make with
you a fascinating trip through the kingdom of greens, rocks and water. The walls of the
gorge are covered by complex lace of lianas, and stones are covered with mosses.
If you float below, then at the very end of canyons you will meet imperial bathrooms in
which the Georgian kings of Dadiani liked to have a rest.
Dendrological park - with over 200 giant trees of unique species, 58 species of birds from
all continents and a bamboo grove. Shekvetili Dendrological Park is spread over 60
hectares and units thousands of species of local and foreign exotic flora.
Fortress of Petra. Which name from Greek means "stone". This territory historically was
the settlement of one of the ancient Kartvelian tribes-Lazis. Because of the unique
strategic and trade and economic arrangement, the emperor Justinian on this place has
built up the strengthened city. Here the important overland road which among
themselves connected western Georgia, the Byzantine provinces, Persia and
Armenia ran. Sea coasting navigation has been also well developed.
Because of inaccessibility, it was called the fortress of Kajeti - "The bewitched fortress".
Fortress repeatedly collapsed and built up again therefore in the territory ruins of the
walls relating to various historical eras have remained. According to a legend, the most
inventive in the conquest of the stronghold were Persians who having made undermining under
one of the towers, have put instead of stones firewood and have set fire to them, as has led
to the collapse of design.
From serf ruins the fascinating view of Kobuleti and Batumi opens. Beside remains of fort
it is possible to find mysterious construction which it is accepted to call Luminary. It
seems that once it was built for the cultivation of citrus, but now is thrown and is similar to
a mysterious labyrinth.
